The RHIC Zero Degree Calorimeters

High Energy collisions of nuclei usually lead to the emission of evaporation neutrons from both “beam” and “target” nuclei. At the RHIC heavy ion collider with 100GeV/u beam energy, evaporation neutrons diverge by less than 2 milliradians from the beam axis. Neutral beam fragments can be detected downstream of RHIC ion collisions (and a large aperture Accelerator dipole magnet) if θ ≤ 4 mr but ...

Some Mappings with Topological Degree Zero

is sometimes proved by determining the topological degree of M at q. If the degree is different from zero, the equation has a solution. However if the degree is zero, then purely topological considerations give practically no information about solutions. The advantage of the topological degree approach is that comparatively little information about the mapping is needed. In this note we study l...

Hypertoric Poisson homology in degree zero

Etingof and Schedler formulated a conjecture about the degree zero Poisson homology of an affine cone that admits a projective symplectic resolution. We strengthen this conjecture in general and prove the strengthened version for hypertoric varieties. We also formulate an analogous conjecture for the degree zero Hochschild homology of a quantization of such a variety.

Motivic Degree Zero Donaldson–thomas Invariants

Given a smooth complex threefold X, we define the virtual motive [Hilb(X)]vir of the Hilbert scheme of n points on X. In the case when X is Calabi–Yau, [Hilb(X)]vir gives a motivic refinement of the n-point degree zero Donaldson–Thomas invariant of X. The key example is X = C, where the Hilbert scheme can be expressed as the critical locus of a regular function on a smooth variety, and its virt...

Degree of sympatry affects reinforcement in Drosophila.

In a recent paper, Yukilevich (2012) showed that asymmetries between Drosophila species in the strength of premating isolation tend to match asymmetries in the costs of hybridization (inferred from asymmetries in the strength of postzygotic isolation and range sizes). The results provide novel evidence that the outcome of reinforcement can depend on the strength and frequency of selection again...
